After a full day and night of stormy weather, and a brief power outage, Lexie was glad to see the sun shining through the leaded-glass in the front doors when she came down the staircase the next morning.
Clutching a coffee mug, Will rushed up to meet her on the steps. “I made cheese omelets. They’re in the pan on the stove.”
She admired him as he took the stairs two at a time. “How can anyone over the age of ten be hyper in the morning?”
Before heading to the kitchen, Lexie stopped in the living room. She cringed at Magnus’s portrait, remembering the events in the courtyard the day before.
“You must have been a real piece of work. No wonder you haunt this house.”
Lexie waited for the ghost to form, to make a noise, something. But the living room was as silent as the grave. Typical. She rolled her eyes, and her gaze stopped on a black spot on the ceiling. Where did that come from?
She squinted at the spot. The eighteen-foot ceiling made it impossible to identify. Lexie feared a burn mark from faulty wiring in the floor above might be the cause. She had to get closer. Lexie found one of Will’s ladders in the office behind the stairs. With several grunts and a curse word or two, she lugged the tall ladder into the room. She set it right below the spot and made sure the ladder’s legs spread out evenly on the floor. She stuck her tongue out at Magnus’s portrait on the way up the ladder, thinking the smirk on his lips was meant for her.
Lexie honed in on the discoloration in the ceiling. “Please don’t be a plumbing leak.”
Something moved in the corner of the room. The overwhelming rush of grief came over her again. The episode hurt so much, she feared not being able to climb down the ladder.
In the haze of her discomfort, shadows rose from the floorboards. Like waterspouts on a lake, the shadows danced around the room and came precariously close to her ladder.
Terrified as the shadows bobbed and weaved around her, making the ladder shake, she was about to call out for Will when the men’s shouting enveloped her. Lexie recognized one of the voices—Magnus Blackwell.
“I’m trying to help her, Jacob.”
“I warned you, Magnus. Leave her be.”
Convinced the ladder might topple over, Lexie willed her body to move. She was halfway down the ladder when the metal frame shuddered as the shadows below twirled faster around its base.
She screamed as the ladder tipped over. The hardwood floor came up to meet her. She put out her arm, bracing for the fall. Then everything went black.
